I spent just over 20 years doing all manner of things from high value target operations in Iraq and Afghan to counter UAS, leading the counter UAS, which I think is a story in itself over in Iraq and Syria.

I guess to kind of roll on to a kind of our first question, I'm interested to get your take on kind of Europe's rearming efforts right now, like how do you see it kind of playing out from your perspective?

Yeah, it's a really interesting one.

I mean, if we look at Germany specifically, we're looking to go into Germany quite soon.

And obviously, everybody's looking at them because they dropped 35 billion.

And so they're very much a target.

probably as a one line summary, there's a very big difference between dropping a load of money and actually building the ecosystem, the industry required to deliver on that money.

And so I think one of the subtleties that I'm starting to understand about rearmament is there's also very much a nervousness coming out of the vast majority of Germans.

For so many years, they've been told, we don't do war, we don't rearm.

And I think that's also something that needs to be considered that for a lot of average Germans on the street, they don't quite understand.

they don't understand like maybe people that are in defence or coming out of defence understand the imperative of why they're rearming in the 1st place.

So I think that's just one subtlety.

I think the other one is the pace at which they're trying to move at.

there's sort of tipping scales where obviously over in Germany across more broadly mainland Europe and kind of the thinking that we've been doing in the UK where we haven't probably got the same amount of budget but we're certainly at the more sort of doctrinally and cognitive end of warfare much more advanced.

So I think for me the opportunities really not should we rearm but how do we create

Where did Shield Space come from?

Well, it was really where Dan and I, my co-founder of C2O, met on the Advanced Orbital Warfare course.

And basically, I realized pretty, it was quite heavy physics, I realized pretty quickly that I was going to fail this course if I didn't find the smartest man in the room and coffee his homework.

So that's exactly what I did.

It's a bit of a long-standing joke.

But he really was just absolutely phenomenal.

the kind of guy, I think he got his PhD in his mid-20s and he's just phenomenally smart.

And yeah, so obviously I'd just come out of counter-UAS at that time and very keenly watching what was going on in Ukraine.

and looking at the fundamentals that was reshaping the low air space out there.

And for the most part that revolves around robotics, autonomy, on edge compute, just a transformation really of technology that was just happening on a week by week and even daily basis.

And I remember quite vividly actually just sat next to Dan saying,

How long do you think it's going to be before this migrates into space?

How long, based on the dynamics that we're seeing, low cost access to launch, which is coming down, I know that's changed a little bit somewhat since.

But again, robotics, autonomy, machine vision, apart from data, you know, the difference between the drone and satellite isn't huge.

And so a lot of those same

that same thinking could be migrated fairly quickly.

A lot of the same technology and thinking could be migrated into space relatively low cost.

About 18 months ago.

Within six months, we went straight, knowing full well that it was going to be capital intensive, went straight to VC and raised just under 2 million pounds within six months.

We've just finished raising again another 1.25 million to grow into Germany and meet that demand signal.

And yeah, we booked up our first launch, which is the broadsword mission that we mentioned at the launch.

And that's fundamentally to send an 8U and a 3U, roughly a microwave and half that again, into Leo and conduct autonomous RPA, rendezvous proximity operations, which is

Just when you think about the pace that we've managed to move at, a space company that actually gets up into orbit and starts delivering on things in a two-year time frame is actually quite phenomenal.

I think what really changed it for me was during the count of the US, obviously I come through that sort of boots on the ground, Iraq, Afghan, where we had air superiority, you can pretty much go anywhere, do anything, and nobody was really going to challenge you apart from obviously the connected two-way fight.

I went away, I think it was around 2021, 22 maybe, and got pushed out to Iraq and by PJSQ and pretty much told to, in probably, how that conversation went down, go and figure it out.

And so I, got embedded into a two-star USHQ with the rest of the guys and

I remember just watching this incident unfold and in this US ops room that didn't exist.

literally next door just sat on their Bergens and kind of having a very visceral sort of image of, do you know what, warfare has changed.

to tell us you've got about 2 1/2 minutes before you get flatbacked by missiles that have been launched from Tehran.

And in that moment, you know, the colonel that was in charge of the option was like, right, everybody evacuate, you, and you, including me, we're going to stay and take the hit.

And just kind of thinking, hold on.

And really, I wanted to get a better understanding of how space actually achieved the high ground, how we connected the dots between JOAs, how we did command and control, and how we essentially got to multi-domain operations, because that's really where we're headed, right?
